Here at The Bali Sun, we have to admit that Kuta is something of a love-it-or-hate-it destination. As polarising as it is, leaders are working around the clock to make Bali’s most famous beach resort a world-class destination.

Let us tell you, the hard work is starting to pay off. Kuta Beach is making a comeback…mark our words.

Bali’s Kuta Beach Prepares For Huge Upgrades Bringing Iconic Vacation Hotspot Into A New Era

Kuta sits within Badung Regency, which is Bali’s most developed region in terms of tourism. Home to destinations like Legian, Seminyak, Canggu, and Uluwatu, leaders in Badung Regency are some of Bali’s biggest tourism stakeholders. The Regent of Badung, Wayan Adi Arnawa, has confirmed that he has huge plans to redevelop Kuta, to help improve the area for both local residents and tourists.

Over the last five years, a series of smaller-scale redevelopments and beach conservation efforts have been taking place in Kuta, and moving forward, Regent Arnawa and his teams will be investing even more in the area. In the last week, Regent Arnawa has visited Kuta to map out the plans to revitalise Kuta.

Plans include spatial planning improvements, traffic management, and beach restoration to restore Kuta’s image as a globally competitive tourism destination. He confirmed that the Badung Regency Government has prepared a major transformation plan, which will begin in 2026.

The initial focus will be on enhancing the area’s aesthetics by widening pedestrian paths and relocating underground utility cables. While all these improvements may not seem like a big deal to tourists when looked at on paper, the reality on the ground is significant.

Regent Arnawa told reporters, “We can’t just work from our desks; we have to go out into the field to see the actual conditions and determine the necessary solutions. We will make this area as aesthetically pleasing as possible.”

Adding “The pedestrian area will be widened to approximately 4 meters, equipped with gardens and green landscaping to create a comfortable atmosphere and make it a suitable tourist destination.”

He confirmed that the project goes beyond just aesthetic improvements to Kuta, which has started to show signs of its age. The revitalization plans are also set to help tackle chronic congestion caused by narrow roads and rampant illegal parking throughout the Kuta Beach and wider resort area. As a solution, he instructed relevant officials to establish centralized parking areas. Once that is sorted, a parking-free zone will be implemented along Kuta’s main roads.

To support mobility for local residents, the local workforce, and tourists, the Badung Regency Government also plans to introduce electric-based public transportation. It seems as though the Badung Regency Government is looking to Sanur for inspiration; the successes over in Bali’s oldest beach resort have proven highly successful at bringing Sanur into the modern era with ease.

Regent Arnawa explained, “With the current narrow road conditions, coupled with illegal parking along the road, it will certainly exacerbate traffic congestion. We will address this. I have instructed the Regional Secretary to prepare a parking space.”

He continued, “After that, we will implement a no-parking zone along this stretch of road. There will also be a dedicated lane for electric public transportation, perhaps marked with specific colors. This way, residents and tourists can enjoy the Kuta area more comfortably.”

Many who have been to Kuta recently will have already seen projects led by the central government, through the River Basin Office, which is currently building breakwaters from Tuban to Kuta. To complement this program, the Badung Regency Government has allocated approximately IDR 250 billion to continue coastal abrasion management efforts as far as Canggu. This helps reverse the impact of sand erosion and creates more beach for tourists to enjoy.

The grand plan is to build an 8-meter-wide coastal pedestrian path connecting Tuban and Canggu. The path will be divided into a jogging track and a dedicated lane for electric bicycles.

Regent Arnawa shared, “Once the breakwater is completed and the sand is re-arranged, the beach will be wider and more comfortable. After that, we’ll design a coastal pedestrian walkway from Tuban to Canggu, approximately 8 meters wide, divided into a jogging track and an electric bike path. Tourists and the public will be able to enjoy the coastal area with a modern, digital-based transportation system.”

He concluded, “We want to restore Kuta to its former glory, as an icon of tourism, tourism, and surfing that is the pride of Bali.”
