Tourists in Bali over the next few days seeking a little more adventure are in luck. This month’s full supermoon is set to be one of the most visually impressive of the year, and this moon cycle is being celebrated in style over on Bali’s neighbouring island of Java.

Java is so big that it’s easy to forget that it is an island. Compared to Bali, Java is a notable landmass upon which you could drive for days without seeing the coast, but it’s an island nonetheless!
The Indonesian tourism board, Wonderful Indonesia, is on a mission to promote Bali as a launchpad for exploring all that the country has to offer. Wonderful Indonesia recently launched a new itinerary connecting tourists seeking soulful adventures on a journey across both Bali and Java.
Java is home to one of the world’s most impressive and spiritually significant temple complexes. The Borobudur Temple Complex is not only a UNESCO World Heritage Site but is also one of Indonesia’s five super priority destinations, aka the ‘five new Balis’.
For tourists set to be in Bali on the 7th October, it is highly recommended to take a look for last-minute flights to Java to be at the Borobudur Temple for what promises to be a magical cultural supermoon event.
The Borobudur Super Moon Festival will be held within the temple complex on the 7th October 2025. The Regent of Magelang told reporters Grengseng Pamuji that spiritual leaders from Bali’s Gianyar Regency, home to the spiritual centre of Ubud, will also be present at the event.
He shared his hopes that this supermoon event would become part of a regular program of events at the temple complex that will bring a host of benefits to both tourists and local communities.
Regent Pamuji shared, “There is an economic space, there is an MSME, homestay, everyone can take part there. The artists are all one. And also to collaborate between tourist destinations in Magelang Regency and Gianyar.”
It is easily possible to arrange a last-minute trip from Bali to Borobudur. While a single-day trip may feel rushed, an overnight stay is possible without too much hassle to be present for the full moon cultural celebrations, but of course, tourists are encouraged to stay longer and experience more.
Borobudur Temple is located in Central Java Province, and there are direct flights between the domestic terminal at I Gusti Ngurah Rai International in Bali multiple times a day, seven days a week. The most popular and affordable routes are operated by Lion Air and Garuda Indonesia.

Depending on tourist travel itinerary plans, there are options to fly into Ahmad Yani International Airport (SRG) in Semarang or Adisumarmo International Airport (SOC) in Solo/Surakarta in order to start an adventure in Central Java. Another option is to travel between Bali and Yogyakarta, and for this route, the situation is just as easy.

Multiple daily flights are operated by Indonesia AirAsia, Garuda Indonesia, and Lion Air. Most tourists opt to fly from the domestic terminal at I Gusti Ngurah Rai International to Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA) and travel onward to Borobudur after exploring the cultural capital of Indonesia, but Adisutjipto International Airport (JOG) is also an option.

In many indigenous cultures across Indonesia, the lunar cycle still holds huge importance in daily life. In Bali, for example, the traditional saka calendar is informed by the lunar cycles, and local communities will conduct purification and prayer ceremonies on both the new moon and the full moon days each month. In Bali, the new moon, or dark moon, is known as ‘tilem’, and the full moon is known as ‘purnama’.
