BADUNG, Bali – What started as a sunset stroll along one of Bali’s most iconic beaches ended in a dramatic overnight rescue after two Russian tourists became trapped by rising tides beneath the cliffs of Padang Padang Beach.
The tourists, identified as 22-year-old Shumskikh Ariadna Anatolievna and 23-year-old Kristia Kirill Eduardovich, had spent part of Saturday afternoon swimming at the popular beach in Pecatu, South Kuta.
After leaving the water, the pair continued walking along the shoreline while enjoying the evening views. But as darkness fell, conditions changed quickly.
According to local authorities, larger waves began crashing against the shoreline as the tide rose, cutting off their route back and leaving them stranded.
The tourists attempted to climb the surrounding cliffs to reach safety but were unable to navigate the steep terrain.
With no way out, Ariadna eventually contacted a friend through Telegram to ask for help. The message was relayed to emergency responders, prompting the Denpasar Search and Rescue Office to launch an operation later that evening.
A rescue team arrived at Padang Padang Beach and coordinated with Water Police officers, lifeguards, local residents, and the tourists’ companions to determine their exact location.
The pair was found within about an hour. However, rescuers faced a difficult challenge. Sharp cliff faces, limited lighting, and dangerous conditions made an immediate evacuation too risky.
Rescue teams monitored tidal information throughout the night while searching for the safest way to reach the stranded tourists.
Despite the challenging conditions, a rope-based rescue operation was eventually carried out. One rescuer was lowered down the cliff before the tourists were brought up to safety one at a time.
“Based on conditions at the scene and after considering the safety of both the victims and rescue personnel, we successfully evacuated them at around 2 a.m.,” rescue coordinator Wahyu said.
Both tourists survived the ordeal with only minor injuries. Authorities said Ariadna was unharmed, while Kristia suffered abrasions to both knees and his left palm.
After being rescued, the pair declined medical treatment, telling authorities they felt well enough to return directly to their villa.
After several tense hours stranded between the sea and the cliffs, the two tourists walked away safely — and with a firsthand reminder of how quickly conditions can change along Bali’s coastline.
