TABANAN, Bali — Five people have been charged after a man accused of stealing chickens was beaten to death by a crowd in Bali’s Tabanan Regency, police said, as authorities warned against vigilante justice.
The fatal assault happened early Friday in Banjar Dinas Juwuk Legi, Batunya Village, Baturiti District. The victim, identified only by his initials KD, was allegedly caught stealing two chickens before being attacked by residents.
Police said officers arrived shortly after the incident and found KD dead at the scene. His motorcycle had also been set on fire.
At a press conference on Sunday, Tabanan Police Chief AKBP I Putu Bayu Pati confirmed that five people — identified by their initials MJ, WS, KB, ML and ND — have been named as suspects in connection with the fatal beating. Investigators said the specific role of each suspect is still being examined.
Police also confirmed that KD was carrying two stolen chickens, along with a knife, a slingshot and several small stones. Investigators said they are still determining the type and value of the chickens.
According to police, six chicken thefts have been reported in the area this year, contributing to growing frustration among residents. Bayu Pati stressed, however, that public anger cannot justify acts of violence.
“Law enforcement must remain measured,” he told reporters.
Sidatapa village head I Made Sutama also urged residents to leave criminal cases to the authorities.
“If someone commits a crime, report it to the police. We live under the rule of law. No one has the right to take another person’s life,” he said.
KD is survived by his wife and three children.
Police said the investigation is continuing and did not rule out the possibility of additional suspects.
