BADUNG, Bali — A viral video involving Indonesian DJ Gebby Vesta and a foreign companion has sparked renewed discussion about tourist transport practices in Bali after the pair alleged they were pressured to pay additional money by a local taxi driver.
The incident reportedly took place in the early hours of Sunday, May 31, after the pair left a restaurant in the Kerobokan area of North Kuta, Badung Regency.
According to Gebby’s account shared on social media, she agreed to hire a local taxi for Rp300,000 despite claiming that comparable ride-hailing fares at the time were significantly lower. She said she accepted the fare because she had previously used the same driver’s services.
The situation allegedly escalated when the driver repeatedly requested additional payment and followed her foreign companion while he attempted to withdraw cash from an ATM. Gebby claimed the tourist became increasingly uncomfortable as the issue of money continued to be raised.
She further alleged that the driver later requested an additional Rp200,000 beyond the agreed fare, leading to a verbal dispute. The confrontation reportedly continued at a nearby convenience store, where footage shared online appears to show the foreign tourist visibly distressed.
According to Gebby, the incident only ended after she began recording the interaction on her phone.
Speaking after the video gained attention online, Gebby said she decided to make the incident public because she believed others may have experienced similar situations but were reluctant to speak out.
The video has since attracted widespread attention across social media platforms, with many users sharing their views on tourist transportation services in Bali.
Disputes involving transportation services have periodically surfaced in some of Bali’s busiest tourism areas, where visitors often encounter a mix of conventional taxis, local transport operators and app-based ride-hailing services. While the vast majority of journeys take place without incident, disagreements over fares and transport access have occasionally generated public debate.
