BADUNG, Bali – A man suspected of opening fire inside a bar in Bali’s Canggu area, injuring a security guard and a Chinese tourist, was arrested at Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport less than 24 hours after the incident, police said on Sunday.
The suspect, identified only by the initial H, is an Indonesian national. Police said he was intercepted shortly after landing in Jakarta on Saturday night and immediately flown back to Bali for questioning following a coordinated operation involving Bali Police, Greater Jakarta Police, airport police, and immigration authorities.
According to investigators, H remained in Bali for several hours after the shooting before attempting to leave the island via I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport. Officers tracked his movements and coordinated with authorities in Jakarta before making the arrest.
The shooting occurred at around 2:50 a.m. on Friday, July 17, at The Shady Pig bar on Jalan Pantai Berawa in Canggu, North Kuta, Badung Regency.
Police said H became involved in an argument with a 25-year-old Chinese national identified by the initials EA. During the altercation, a security guard, identified as IMYM, stepped in to break up the dispute.
Investigators said H then allegedly fired a shot. The bullet struck the security guard in the left thigh before passing through and hitting EA, who was standing directly behind him. Both men were taken to hospital, where they continue to receive medical treatment.
Following the shooting, investigators secured the crime scene, interviewed witnesses, reviewed CCTV footage, and collected evidence, including a copper-colored bullet projectile, blood-stained clothing, footwear, and other items believed to be linked to the incident.
Badung Police Chief AKBP Joseph Edward Purba confirmed the suspect’s arrest but declined to provide further details, saying investigators would release additional information as the investigation progresses.
Police have not yet disclosed a motive for the shooting or the type of firearm allegedly used. The investigation remains ongoing.
