PERERENAN, Bali — A fire broke out at Pepito Market in Pererenan on Sunday morning, causing an estimated Rp400 million in damage, with police suspecting an electrical fault near the checkout area as the likely cause.
The fire was first spotted at around 6:30 a.m. by a security guard who was watering the supermarket’s front parking area. He noticed flames near the cashier counters and immediately went inside to try to put them out.
The guard used three fire extinguishers and also cut power to the rear section of the supermarket, but the flames continued to grow. He then called for help from nearby residents, while firefighters were contacted.
Three Badung Regency fire engines were deployed to the scene and managed to bring the fire under control. The blaze was fully extinguished at around 7 a.m.
Police said two cashier counters were badly burned, while goods within roughly three metres of the fire were also damaged. The ceiling above the checkout area was burned through and partially collapsed.
Initial findings indicate that the fire may have started from electrical wiring beneath cashier counters one and two, although authorities have not yet issued a final determination on the cause.
Badung Police officers and investigators from Mengwi Police later secured the area, installed police lines and collected statements from witnesses.
No injuries or fatalities were reported.
Authorities estimated the material losses at around Rp400 million.
The investigation remains ongoing.
