DENPASAR — An Australian national was arrested in Bali after allegedly buying cannabis for Rp2 million from an unidentified person on Kuta Beach and later reselling it, police said.
Aaron Robert Brokenshire, 36, was arrested by officers from the Denpasar Police Narcotics Unit at his apartment in South Denpasar in August.
Police said a search of the apartment uncovered 37 packets of cannabis weighing a total of 36.64 grams. Officers also seized two other packets containing what was suspected to be narcotics-laced tobacco, commonly known as synthetic tobacco, weighing 21.30 grams.
“He had previously purchased cannabis from an unidentified person for Rp2 million on Kuta Beach,” Denpasar Police spokesperson First Inspector I Gede Adi Saputra Jaya said on Friday (Sept. 11).
Police also seized a methamphetamine smoking device, commonly known as a bong, and an electronic scale.
Brokenshire, who was born in Mona Vale, Australia, was taken to the Denpasar Police Narcotics Unit along with the evidence for further investigation and legal proceedings, Adi said.
During questioning, Brokenshire admitted to distributing cannabis, according to police. He also told investigators that he had no previous conviction for drug offences.
Police said he faces charges under Article 111(1) of Indonesia’s 2009 Narcotics Law, which carries a maximum prison sentence of 12 years.
The investigation remains ongoing.
