Danish Tourist Dies After Snorkeling Off Bali’s Nusa Penida

KLUNGKUNG, Bali – A Danish tourist died after falling ill shortly after a snorkeling trip off Bali’s Nusa Penida Island, with police suspecting he suffered a heart attack.

The 42-year-old man, identified by his initials AKL, collapsed at Samah Nusa Lembongan Villa in Lembongan Village, Nusa Penida District, at around 11:30 a.m. local time on Monday (June 29).

According to Nusa Penida Police Chief I Ketut Kesuma Jaya, the tourist had just returned to his accommodation after snorkeling in the waters around Nusa Penida when he began experiencing shortness of breath and complained of feeling unwell.

“Based on witness statements, the victim had been snorkeling in the waters of Nusa Penida before returning to the villa,” Kesuma said on Tuesday.

Moments later, he collapsed and lost consciousness. Villa staff and his companions immediately administered first aid before rushing him to East Medical Lembongan Clinic, where he was pronounced dead.

Police officers later examined the scene and interviewed witnesses as part of their investigation.

A preliminary external examination found no signs of violence or physical injuries. Investigators believe the tourist may have suffered a sudden heart attack following the snorkeling trip, although the exact cause of death could not be confirmed because his family declined an autopsy.

The body was later transferred from Nusa Penida to Bali Mandara Hospital in Denpasar for further handling.

“The victim’s family has accepted his passing and declined an autopsy,” Kesuma said.
