Bali is celebrating 100 years of tourism in 2027, and to mark the occasion, the Bali Provincial Government is hosting a series of special events.
From cultural shows to community fun runs in iconic locations, celebrating 100 Years of Bali Tourism is going to be real good fun.

Last weekend, Bali hosted the first of its 100 Years of Bali Tourism events, and low-key, the Bali Tourism Board pulled out all the stops. Here at The Bali Sun, we were seriously impressed and now have high hopes for the upcoming events.
The first community fun run event was hosted by the UNESCO World Heritage Jatiluwih Rice Terraces. The idea now is that at the end of each of these community fun run events, which are open to tourists too, the next destination will be announced.
Speaking to reporters, Bali Regional Secretary Dewa Made Indra shared, “The idea came from the Chairman of Asita (the Association of Indonesian Tour and Travel Agencies), and the next event will be held in Besakih.”
“We’ll discuss this further later. The Governor of Bali has already provided guidance: we must move from one tourist destination to another, starting with the leading tourist destinations that represent harmony between people, culture, and nature.”
A run around the Mother Temple! All we can say is WOW, that is going to be something special. Pura Besakih is the most important temple for Balinese Hindus, and it is the biggest on the island. Any visit to Pura Besakih, whether as a visitor or worshipper, is a moving experience, and the upcoming events for the 100 Years of Bali Tourism will be next level.
The first event, hosted at Jatilwuih Rice Terraces, was a 5km run with more than 1,700 runners in attendance. The event at Besakih will also be a 5km run through the area, which can accommodate many more people.
Indra told reporters that the vision for the events is clear, “Through this Bali Tourism Run, we are introducing it to tourists, both international and domestic. Hopefully, in the future, Bali will be even better.”
He added, “We must continue to be creative in creating new tourism events, one of which is running, because it’s currently trending.”
“Jatiluwih is the starting point for that, so let’s start from here. We want to send the message that this is Balinese tourism: it’s not just tourism that seeks economic profit, but also must continue to prioritize our cultural and environmental roots.”

He noted how sports tourism is booming in Bali right now and brings together many different traveler demographics with a shared love for life. More details will be announced soon, including how to sign up and the specific dates and times for the event, so watch this space.
With us here at The Bali Sun, you’ll be amongst the first to know. We have a feeling that the 100 Years of Bali Tourism Fun Run at Pura Besakih will be a sellout, so we’ll all have to move quickly to secure our spots!

In the meantime, tourists do not need to wait for the fun run to be able to visit Pura Besakih. Located a 90-minute drive from the centre of Ubud, a visit to Pura Besakih is a full-day trip.
Here at The Bali Sun, we highly recommend hiring a local driver and guide for visiting Pura Besakih.

Unlike many of Bali’s temples, like Tanah Lot or Uluwatu Temple, Pura Besakih is such an important place that having a guided tour really makes all the difference. Plus, not all areas of the temple are open to tourists all the time, so it’s good to have someone with you who is in the know.
Of course, it is essential to honor temple etiquette by wearing a sarong, sash, and a modest top, behaving calmly and respectfully, and being mindful of ceremonial activities and worship. The entry fee for tourists includes the rental of a sarong and sash if you forget to bring one!
