Russian Woman Sentenced in Bali for Failing to Report Boyfriend’s Cannabis Operation

DENPASAR, Bali – The Denpasar District Court has sentenced a Russian national, Kseniia Varlamova, 33, to eight months and 15 days in prison after finding her guilty of failing to report a narcotics crime committed by her partner.

The verdict was handed down on Thursday, June 4, by a panel of judges chaired by Iman Lukmanul Hakim. The court found that Varlamova was aware of an illegal hydroponic cannabis cultivation operation run by her boyfriend, Dutch national Nirul Rashim Abdoelrazak, but deliberately failed to report it to authorities.

“The defendant has been legally and convincingly proven guilty of failing to report a narcotics crime as stated in the second indictment of the public prosecutor,” presiding judge Iman Lukmanul Hakim said while reading the verdict.

The court subsequently imposed a prison sentence of eight months and 15 days.

The sentence was 15 days longer than the eight-month prison term previously sought by prosecutor I Made Lovi Pusnawan.

Following the ruling, Varlamova accepted the verdict, while prosecutors stated they were still considering whether to file an appeal.

The case stemmed from the discovery of a hydroponic cannabis cultivation operation at a residence in Ubung Kaja, North Denpasar. Rashim, who is being tried separately, previously faced a demand for nine years in prison and a Rp1 billion fine.

According to court documents, Rashim began preparing the cultivation facility in March 2025 by constructing a dedicated growing room. He later planted cannabis seedlings using hydroponic methods in August 2025, eventually harvesting and storing cannabis leaves and flowers produced from the plants.

During the trial, prosecutors presented evidence showing that Varlamova was aware of the cultivation activities. She was also found to have photographed some of the cannabis seedlings grown by her partner.

Despite having knowledge of the operation, she never reported it to law enforcement authorities.

Prosecutors charged Varlamova under Article 131 in conjunction with Article 111 paragraph (2) of Indonesia’s Narcotics Law No. 35 of 2009, which criminalizes the deliberate failure to report a known narcotics offense.

The case was uncovered on October 1, 2025, when officers from Bali Police’s Narcotics Directorate raided the house occupied by the couple. Authorities seized cannabis plants and hydroponic cultivation equipment before detaining both foreign nationals for further legal proceedings.
