CANGGU, Bali – A viral street fight outside Gigi Susu, one of Canggu’s best-known cafes, began after a taxi driver was allegedly spat on by a foreign tourist, according to police. What started as a roadside confrontation along Jalan Pantai Batu Bolong quickly escalated into a physical altercation involving foreign nationals, a taxi driver, and several local motorcycle taxi drivers.
The incident occurred on the afternoon of June 15 and attracted widespread attention after videos of the fight circulated across social media, prompting questions about what had actually happened before the confrontation turned violent.
North Kuta Police Chief Kompol I Ketut Sukadana said officers visited the scene and gathered witness statements to reconstruct the sequence of events behind the viral clash.
According to police, the dispute began at around 3:35 p.m. when a taxi driver was traveling northbound along Jalan Pantai Batu Bolong.
The driver allegedly became the target of an unpleasant act when one of three foreign nationals riding two large scooters spat at him while passing by.
Feeling offended by the incident, the taxi driver chased the group and eventually overtook them. Both parties then stopped in front of Gigi Susu, where tensions quickly escalated.
Police said a foreign national wearing a white shirt got off his motorcycle and struck the rear window of the taxi. The driver then exited his vehicle, leading to a heated verbal argument between the two sides.
A second foreign national dressed in black reportedly attempted to calm the situation and separate those involved. However, emotions remained high and the confrontation continued.
The situation appeared to be cooling down when the group of foreign nationals prepared to leave the area and ride north.
But as they passed the taxi, the driver allegedly punched one of the foreigners who was riding as a passenger on a motorcycle.
The punch triggered a physical fight.
The confrontation soon attracted the attention of nearby online motorcycle taxi drivers and conventional motorcycle taxi drivers, who gathered around the scene as the altercation unfolded.
As more people became involved, the disturbance grew larger and more chaotic.
Security personnel from Gigi Susu, identified by police as Kanis, Donis, and Kris, quickly intervened and worked to separate those involved before the situation escalated further.
The fight was eventually brought under control, and both parties dispersed from the location. The group of foreign nationals left first, followed shortly afterward by the taxi driver once the situation had calmed.
Police said the incident stemmed from an initial act that sparked a confrontation and later escalated into physical violence after additional people became involved.
No serious injuries were reported.
While the fight lasted only a matter of minutes, the footage spread rapidly online, drawing significant public attention and sparking debate across social media.
The incident also highlights how quickly tensions can escalate in Bali’s busy tourism hubs, where crowded roads, cultural misunderstandings, and impulsive reactions can turn minor disputes into highly public confrontations.
