Caught on CCTV: American Tourist Busted for Stealing from Bali Hotels

An American tourist’s sneaky crime spree in Bali has come to an end. Shane Lonnie Speirs, 49, was arrested by Kuta Police for allegedly stealing valuables from several hotels in the popular tourist area of Kuta, Badung.

According to police, Speirs posed as a hotel guest and lingered near reception areas — spots commonly used by tourists while checking in or out. He would patiently wait for moments when guests left their belongings unattended before swiftly snatching them.

“He came to the hotels pretending to be a guest. He sat near the reception desk, observed the situation, and once the moment was right, he took the targeted item,” said Kuta Police Chief AKP Agus Riwayanto during a press conference held at Denpasar Police Headquarters on Monday (May 5).

Police revealed that Speirs had no specific targets and acted whenever opportunity struck. He was living in cheap, temporary accommodations and moved around frequently. The stolen goods were either used by the suspect or sold to cover his daily expenses.

“In one case, he stole a bag that only contained clothes — he ended up wearing them himself. The rest he sold for cash,” Riwayanto explained.

The case came to light after a tourist from Bulgaria, Desisl Ava Dimitrova Harseva, reported her suitcase missing from a hotel lobby in Kuta on March 26. Following her report, Kuta Police launched an investigation and reviewed CCTV footage, which clearly showed the suspect taking the luggage. This eventually led to Speirs’ arrest.

The evidence recovered includes a black Bebe suitcase, two pairs of Burberry sunglasses, one pair of Tom Ford sunglasses, Nike shoes, a Philips hair straightener, and two pairs of pants.

As a broader update, Denpasar Police revealed that in April alone, their criminal investigation unit and local police managed to solve 46 cases and arrest 64 suspects, including 13 minors and four women. The crimes included aggravated theft, motorcycle theft, robbery, and common theft.
