Bali Airport has long committed to improving its facilities for travelers. To make the airport terminal more accessible and inclusive, Bali Airport is constantly improving by employing new technologies to reduce queuing and improve efficiency.
The team at Bali’s I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport has shared an update on the new baggage check system that was introduced in July.
The new system was designed to help speed up check-in times, improve security, and improve passenger comfort. Management is happy to announce that the upgrades appear to have ticked all three boxes in just a few short weeks.
Previously, baggage inspection happened upon entry to the terminal buildings, prior to check-in with airlines. Upon arrival at the terminal building, passengers had to place all of their baggage, including checked and hand luggage, through X-Ray scanners.
Now, the checked baggage checks happen at check-in, and the hand luggage checks happen at security.
Speaking to reporters, the General Manager of I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, Ahmad Syaugi Shahab, explained that this change was taken as part of an effort to reduce interaction points or touchpoints with passengers, especially those that have the potential to cause queues.
His teams are committed to creating a seamless journey for all airport service users, and it is now proven from a security perspective that international passengers do not need to go through the inspection or prescreening process at the entrance of the departure terminal.
Shahab told reporters, “We assess that with the implementation of this system, the inspection of people and checked baggage becomes more effective, but while maintaining full aspects of flight security. What is also important is that the passenger travel time becomes shorter.”
He explained that after passengers report at the check-in counter, the passengers’ luggage is immediately checked using the Multi-View Dual-Energy (MVXR) X-ray machine installed in the Hold Baggage Screening Check Point (HBSCP) area. This machine is designed to be able to detect dangerous objects more accurately than previous devices. After this, the passenger and cabin baggage checks are carried out in the Passenger Security Check Point (PSCP) area before entering the departure waiting room.
Shahab told reporters, “The passenger and luggage inspection is only enough once, before entering the waiting room area. A similar system is said to have been first implemented in the domestic departure terminal.”
He added “”This program is a security measure regulated in international aviation safety standards as stated in the annex 17 Doc 8973 amendment document and also the Decree of the Minister of Transportation of the Republic of Indonesia Number KM 39 Year 2024 regarding the National Aviation Security Program.”
It is all part of a wider mission to keep passengers moving seamlessly through the airport, both on arrival and at departure.
Bali Airport currently sees, on average, 31,000 passengers a day, which can easily rise to 60,000 in the height of the peak season or during religious holidays.
Shahab called on travellers to continue to cooperate with airport and airline staff to ensure that Bali Airport remains a safe and comfortable place for all.
He concluded, “We want to appeal to the public to pay attention and comply with the flight rules. Avoid carrying items that are prohibited from entering the baggage, such as power banks or other objects that use lithium batteries, electronic cigarettes, and other items, as regulated in the flight requirements, because flight safety is the responsibility of all of us.”
Bali Airport has also been on a mission to improve accessibility and inclusivity throughout the airport buildings. In a recent social media post, the airport team gave updates about accessibility features that all passengers can benefit from, including priority chairs, wheelchair services, accessible bathrooms, a dedicated Special Needs Counter, and dedicated drop-off and pick-up zones for those with accessibility needs.
