JAKARTA, Indonesia — Indonesia were crowned champions of the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup after defeating Thailand 4-2 on penalties following a dramatic 2-2 draw at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium on Monday night.
The victory ended a 10-year, eight-match winless run against Thailand and gave Indonesia the first FIFA ASEAN Cup title in front of a home crowd in Jakarta.
Neither side managed to score during the opening 80 minutes before the final suddenly burst into life.
Thailand were reduced to 10 men after Nicholas Mickelson received his second yellow card in the 81st minute.
Indonesia took advantage three minutes later when Dean James’ free-kick from the edge of the penalty area took a deflection and found the net, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead.
Thailand responded almost immediately.
Iklas Sanron levelled the score in the 87th minute with a volley at the far post, sending the final into extra time.
Despite playing with 10 men, Thailand then stunned Indonesia when Peeradol Chamrasamee scored in the 111th minute to put the visitors ahead 2-1.
Indonesia refused to give up.
Five minutes later, Elkan Baggott struck a dramatic equaliser, his shot going in off the underside of the crossbar to make it 2-2 and force the final to a penalty shootout.
Indonesia converted all four of their penalties through Kevin Diks, Dean James, Elkan Baggott and Shayne Pattynama.
Thailand captain Sarach Yooyen failed with his side’s third attempt before Indonesia goalkeeper Emil Audero saved Nattapong Sayriya’s penalty to seal a 4-2 shootout victory and trigger celebrations inside Gelora Bung Karno.
The triumph made Indonesia the first champions of the FIFA ASEAN Cup, with the 2026 tournament marking the inaugural edition of the regional competition.
President Prabowo Subianto and FIFA President Gianni Infantino were among those watching the final from the stadium.
The result also marked Indonesia’s first victory over Thailand in eight meetings stretching back a decade, making the title-winning night even more significant for the national team.
