New Zealander on Trial After Cat Toy Allegedly Smashes Bali Bar TV

DENPASAR, Bali — A New Zealand man has gone on trial in Bali over an unusual case involving a cat-shaped toy, a 55-inch television and a late-night visit to a bar in Pererenan.

Kieran Paul Glasspole appeared before Denpasar District Court on Tuesday, where prosecutors accused him of damaging a Samsung television at Sense Sport Bar on Jalan Munduk Kedungu.

According to the indictment, Glasspole arrived at the bar alone at around 10:20 p.m. and ordered three bottles of beer and a glass of whisky before sitting at the bar.

At around 11 p.m., prosecutors said he became involved in a heated phone conversation in English.

After ending the call, Glasspole allegedly asked bartender Dewa Gede Angga Tribawa to record him using his phone.

What happened next became the centre of the case.

Prosecutors allege Glasspole picked up a cat-shaped toy from the bar and threw it toward the television, causing the screen to shut off and become damaged.

The estimated loss was Rp5.838 million.

The night apparently did not end there. According to the indictment, Glasspole ordered another beer and later invited the bartender to play pool before eventually leaving when he was told the venue was about to close.

Prosecutors said the incident may have been linked to a dispute with the bar’s owner, whom Glasspole had allegedly wanted to meet that evening.

The indictment states that Glasspole believed the owner had adopted elements of a business previously operated by his wife, including aspects of its design, menu, suppliers and operations.

Prosecutors allege the television was damaged in an attempt to prompt the owner to come to the venue.

Glasspole has been charged under Article 521(1) of Indonesia’s Criminal Code in relation to damage to another person’s property.

He was not detained during the investigation or prosecution process.

The case remains before the court, and the allegations have not yet resulted in a conviction.
