DENPASAR — A Dutch woman was detained by immigration authorities after allegedly causing disturbances at a hotel and later at the Denpasar Immigration Office in Bali, officials said Tuesday.
The 67-year-old woman, identified by her initials FMMM, was initially reported to police following a dispute with staff at the hotel where she was staying on Sunday, Sept. 20.
Denpasar Immigration Office head R Haryo Sakti said police responded to the report and later handed the woman over to immigration authorities for further processing.
While being questioned at the Denpasar Immigration Office, however, she allegedly became disruptive again.
“During the examination process at the Denpasar Immigration Office, FMMM again caused a disturbance for no clear reason,” Haryo said.
Immigration officers transferred her to the Denpasar Immigration Detention Centre in Jimbaran, Badung, at around noon on Monday, Sept. 21.
Authorities said she would remain at the detention centre while officials determine further immigration measures.
FMMM is suspected of violating Article 75(1) of Indonesia’s Immigration Law, which allows immigration authorities to impose administrative measures on foreign nationals who are considered a threat to public security or order, engage in harmful activities or fail to comply with Indonesian law.
“Every foreign national in Indonesia is required to comply with applicable laws and norms,” Haryo said.
Immigration authorities said they had not yet determined what triggered the woman’s behaviour at either the hotel or the immigration office.
Officials said further immigration action would be considered once her condition was stable and that they would coordinate with representatives of the Netherlands over the case.
