GILI TRAWANGAN, Indonesia — A 31-year-old South Korean tourist is missing after becoming separated from her group while snorkelling off Gili Trawangan in North Lombok.
The woman, identified as Cheon Yuri, was snorkelling with friends at around 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 6, when she reportedly left the group to look for sea turtles.
According to the Mataram Search and Rescue Office, a witness last saw Cheon swimming and floating normally in the water before losing sight of her.
Her companions returned to shore at around 2 p.m. but realised Cheon had not returned with them.
Friends and local residents initially searched the surrounding waters but were unable to locate her.
The incident was later reported to authorities, prompting a joint search and rescue operation.
Personnel from the Bangsal SAR Alert Unit were deployed by sea to search the area where Cheon was last seen.
The operation involved the Mataram Search and Rescue Office, Indonesian Navy personnel, water police, local police, volunteers, residents and fishermen.
Search teams used boats to comb waters around Gili Trawangan throughout the afternoon.
The first day of the operation ended without finding the missing tourist.
Authorities resumed the search on Wednesday morning, October 7, with teams continuing to focus on waters around the location where Cheon was last seen.
As of the latest confirmed information, Cheon remains missing and the search operation is ongoing.
