BADUNG, Bali — A 60-year-old Dutch national died after falling from the fifth floor of a hotel in Uluwatu, South Bali, on Saturday night, September 12, police said.
The man, identified by authorities by his initials MJR, was found lying on a road within the hotel premises shortly after the incident.
According to Denpasar Police spokesperson Iptu I Gede Adi Saputra Jaya, CCTV footage showed MJR arriving at a corner of the fifth-floor corridor at around 10:10 p.m. local time.
The footage reportedly showed him lifting a curtain, crossing the barrier and standing on the outer wall before falling from the building.
Police estimated the height of the fifth floor at approximately 14 metres.
Hotel staff discovered MJR several minutes later after a restaurant employee reported seeing a guest lying on the road below. The hotel subsequently contacted police and medical personnel.
Medical personnel confirmed that MJR had died at the scene.
Police said MJR had suffered a fractured right wrist, an injury to his right elbow and an abrasion to the right side of his abdomen.
His body was later taken to the mortuary at Prof. Ngoerah General Hospital in Denpasar.
Police have examined the hotel’s CCTV footage as part of their investigation. Authorities have not publicly established a motive for the incident.
Police also said MJR had been staying at the hotel since August 16, nearly a month before his death. According to the hotel, he had not made any payment for his stay despite several requests for settlement.
The unpaid hotel bill was disclosed by police as part of the circumstances surrounding the case. It has not been established that the outstanding bill was a cause of the incident.
The investigation remains ongoing.
