The President of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, has been in Bali this week to conduct a series of official visits to new medical facilities on the island.

President Subiatno has inaugurated the Bali International Hospital in Sanur, which is set to become a world-leading medical tourism facility. He also visited the new Ngoerah Sun Wellness and Aesthetic Center (NSWAC) at Prof. Dr. IGNG Ngoerah General Hospital, which opened in October 2024.

During his opening speech at the Ngoerah Sun Wellness and Aesthetic Center (NSWAC) at Prof. Dr. IGNG Ngoerah General Hospital, President Subianto was accompanied by Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin, Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya, Director of Prof. Ngoerah Hospital, Dr. I Wayan Sudana, and Deputy General Manager of NSWAC, Dr. Nahla Shihab.

Prof. Dr. IGNG Ngoerah General Hospital is also commonly referred to as Sanglah General Hospital. The development of the new Ngoerah Sun Wellness and Aesthetic Center has been created as part of a collaborative partnership with Sun Healthcare International Korea.

Throughout his visit, President Subianto was guided by Dr. Nahla Shihab, Deputy General Manager of the Ngoerah Sun Wellness and Aesthetic Center. President Prabowo reviewed the huge range of facilities and service rooms within the center and was deeply impressed. He told reporters, “I think this is a breakthrough, a very good achievement for us to be able to provide services that are not inferior to the best services abroad.”

There is a big effort underway within the medical and tourism industry in Indonesia at the moment to help prevent privately paying Indonesian patients from traveling abroad for treatment. Coupled with this focus is a commitment to establishing Indonesia more firmly as a medical tourism destination for international medical tourists who may otherwise seek treatment in destinations such as Singapore, Thailand, Hong Kong, or South Korea.

President Subianto praised the teams behind the Ngoerah Sun Wellness and Aesthetic Center for their contribution to Indonesia’s economic growth and stability, as well as their commitment to serving Indonesian and international medical patients.

He told reporters, “I see this cooperation is extraordinary. And I see that it has also succeeded in attracting patients from abroad. I also see that the facilities are extraordinary, the technology is also very advanced. I congratulate all parties who have worked so that it produces an asset for our nation and country.”

Dr. Shihab shared more information with reporters about what medical tourists can expect from a visit to the facility. The center offers a range of wellness treatments, dermaesthetic treatments, plastic surgery, and aesthetic dentistry.

The new clinic has been a hotly anticipated development in Bali, with the team at Sanglah General Hospital announcing the start of the project back in 2022. One of the intentions of the project was to help attract more international medical tourists to Bali, especially from Australia.

The center has already established a loyal clientele of Russian and Ukrainian medical tourists too. Dr

Shihab told reporters, “In Bali, the standard is now the same as South Korea. So people who need such services are enough in Indonesia, enough in Bali, no need to go abroad.”

Medical tourists traveling to Bali now have more choices than ever when it comes to world-class medical facilities.

The new Bali International Hospital was inaugurated by President Subianto on 26th June, and he too praised the commitment of the visionaries behind the project and the teams now responsible for caring for thousands of patients.

President Subianto was clear, however, that as medical tourism facilities receive millions of dollars worth of investment, medical facilities for all Indonesian people must also be improved.

He told reporters, “I feel proud that Indonesia has facilities like this, and with our insurance system, we must feel strong. This is not limited only to the upper class, with health services that anyone needs. If necessary insurance and government intervention [will be issued] so that people who are less economically able can also have access to the best services because there are also advanced tools here.”
