Bali is home to some of the most luxurious hotels on earth, and travel trends show that demand for luxury experiences in Bali continues to grow.
For those yearning to get back to basics, experience the beauty of unmanicured nature, and connect with local, adventurous Bali-based souls, there is one very special region of Bali that is crying out to be explored.

Lake Tamblingan, which is one of Bali’s Twin Lakes, is a much-loved hangout of Bali’s most adventurous souls.
Every weekend, loving young folks head to the banks of Lake Tamblingan to set up their tents and camping equipment and enjoy the simplest pleasures in life: the great outdoors and good-hearted people.
Lake Tamblingan is not only a beautiful landscape to immerse in, but it also holds a special cultural significance for Balinese people.
According to local folk tradition, the name “Tamblingan” actually holds profound meaning. The word ‘Tamba’ means medicine, while ‘Elingang’ means ‘remember’.
The name of this stunning lake is believed to hold a message from the ancestors who named it, explaining how the lake’s water acts as a form of medicine that reminds people of the importance of living in harmony with nature and its ability to help heal the heart and mind.
For generations, the shores of Tamblingan have offered local families a place to retreat and recharge. It is not uncommon to find solo campers along the shores of the lake who are looking for some time away from the hustle and bustle of daily life and are yearning for some space, quiet, and personal reflection.
Being located so far north, the air around Lake Tamblingan and Lake Buyan, the Twin Lakes, is always cool and crisp, offering some respite to the often sweltering heat of the coast. Whether an avid camper or a happy day tripper, there are many different ways to soak up the magic of Lake Tamblingan.
For the ultra-outdoorsy types, there are plenty of campsites available for super cheap pitch rates throughout the year. Many of these camp sites also offer camping equipment hire for those who do not have their own.
Camping shops such as Eiger, which have stores in Kuta, Denpasar, and Ubud, stock a full, comprehensive range of high-quality and affordable camping equipment for those visitors who want to invest in gear when they land in Indonesia.

For those who fancy a little more comfort, a happy middle ground can be found at one of the many glamping sites and tented camps that have been opened around the Twin Lakes area.
Many of these properties also offer adorable cabins and small chalet-style accommodations for added comfort. Uma Tyang Pancasari is a popular choice, as is the simply named Wanagiri Campsite; for 3-star comfort, check out The Garuda Hotel Wanagiri.

Tourists not keen on pitching up, or even those who don’t have the space in their itinerary for an overnight stay close to the Twin Lakes, can still soak up the magic and adventure of the area.
Whether on a day trip waterfall hopping in nearby Munduk, or soaking up the cultural wonders of the Bedugul Highlands at Ulun Danu Beratan Temple and Handara Gate, there are some must-visit attractions at the Twin Lakes.

There are no two ways about it, the views over Lake Tamblingan are simply breathtaking, which is why dozens of entrepreneurial local communities have opened dedicated selfie spots, photo platforms, and even Bali swings.
The Wanagiri Hidden Hill Bali offers fantastic views, a warm welcome, and an almost overwhelming amount of different curated photo spots to choose from. Puncak Wanagiri is another honourable mention, though it offers a view over the equally impressive, and much larger, Lake Buyan.
