Tourists arriving at Bali’s I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport will notice some changes. Airport management teams have installed a series of thermal scanning devices as Indonesia works to reduce the spread of a new ‘Super Flu’ that is sweeping the region.

The emergence of a new Super Flu virus has sparked concern amongst medical professionals in Indonesia, and as a result, thermal scanning devices have been installed at the arrivals terminals of I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport and other international airports nationwide.

Speaking to reporters, the General Manager of I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, Nugroho Jati, said that as one of the largest international entry points in Indonesia, Bali Airport routinely monitors developments in circulating health issues, including information about viruses such as the superflu, which is currently being discussed in the medical community.

Jati shared, “Regarding the health issue currently being discussed, namely superflu, I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, as it is a fairly large international entry point, has certainly attracted attention.” Jati emphasized that further information regarding the development and handling of the Super Flu remains the responsibility of the Indonesian Ministry of Health. Bali Airport will follow any directives issued by health authorities, Jati explained.

He added, “Since Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport is an international entry point with a significant number of passengers, I believe the symptoms we’ve studied and obtained are more or less similar to those of people with the flu, so detection is more visible when the body temperature is high.”

Jati explained, “They have been installed, everything is operating well, and the Ministry of Health will provide further information regarding developments and follow-up measures.”

He concluded, “The Ministry of Health will, of course, provide further developments and policies. We at the airport are preparing facilities and personnel to ensure they remain ready.”

“For now, we are coordinating with the Indonesian Quarantine Agency and the Indonesian Port Health Office. The current status is still low, and we must remain vigilant. No special protocols have been implemented.”

It is not uncommon for thermal scanners to be installed at Bali Airport. When borders reopened after the Covid-19 pandemic, thermal scanners were commonplace not only at the airport but also in many public spaces, including government offices and shopping malls.

In 2025, the thermal scanners were installed as rates of M-Pox increased around Indonesia and Southeast Asia more broadly.

A total of 25 scanners have been installed at I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, at both the international and domestic arrivals terminals.

At present, the airport has not recorded any Super Flu cases, and the airport continues to serve an average of 66,000 passengers every day.

The Super Flu virus is present in Indonesia, with figures from national medical agencies confirming that 62 cases were recorded in eight provinces in December 2025, including East Java, West Java, and Kalimantan.

The Super Flu in question is formally known as  A H3N2 subclade K. This variant of seasonal flu has been around for some time, but according to the World Health Organisation, the virus has undergone a series of mutations.

Cases have been recorded globally, including in Canada, Japan, and the USA, as early as October 2025.

Tourists traveling to Bali are advised to take health and hygiene seriously, though no specific protocols have been put in place.

As a long-standing safeguarding measure, all arrivals into Indonesia are required to fill out medical declaration forms within the All Indonesia app. This is a screening measure that is also used to keep a track of passengers who pose a potential risk to public health. Tourists traveling to Bali must ensure that they have a fully comprehensive medical and travel insurance policy prior to arriving in Indonesia.
