Bali is currently experiencing the impacts of Cyclone Seed 93S, which is causing widespread flooding in the top tourism resort area.

The Acting Head of Bali’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), Ketut Sudiarta, told reporters, “The most lightning strikes occurred in Tabanan Regency during that period.” Extreme weather warnings are in place until the 18th December, and could be extended.

Tabanan Regency, home to top tourism attractions like Tanah Lot Temple and Jatiluwih Rice Terraces, recorded 19,112 lightning strikes in just four days.

Badung Regency, home to destinations like Canggu, Seminyak, Legian, and Kuta, saw 5,753 lightning strikes. While the staggering number of lightning strikes may be alarming to read, the real concern is the flooding hitting Bali right now.

Tourists and residents have had to be evacuated from their properties over the last four days, with more evacuations expected to take place as rain continues to fall. The Bali Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) confirmed that five of Bali’s nine regencies have been impacted by flooding.

The Head of the BPBD Gede Agung Teja Bhusana Yadnya, confirmed “The first incident was a flood in Karangasem, the next day we had an incident in Denpasar and Badung, then yesterday (Monday 15th December) Gianyar and Jembrana, and this threat still has potential for the next few days.”

He added, “Then in Denpasar there were 20 flood points and in Badung 14 points, so it’s quite a lot, although not as many as in September, and the points were different because the characteristics of the rainfall were different.”

Yadnya continued, “In Gianyar, yesterday one person was injured, but there were no evacuations. Everyone was at home, but many houses were affected. In many places, there were already flood-affected areas. However, the water has escalated. Previously, it was below the knee; now it has risen to the waist.”

When asked about the impact that the Cyclone Seed 93S is having on tourism, Yadnya confirmed that 191 local families were impacted by this week’s extreme weather, and at least 150 tourists had to adjust their travel plans.

He noted, “More than 150 tourists were not evacuated but rather moved to another accommodation. Some checked out, and some indeed were at the end of their vacation time. But there were also those who shortened their vacation.”

Yadnya issued an alarming update with regard to Bali’s preparedness to navigate the remainder of the rainy season, which typically runs until the end of March and into early April.

He explained, “The environmental carrying capacity is not yet ready, not yet in accordance with the ability to drain water properly, the spatial planning, the drainage systems, indeed, we require drainage system engineering to anticipate rainfall.”

Officers from Bali’s Search and Rescue Units, Barsarnas, have also been responding to emergency call-outs and have urged tourists and the wider public to observe the extreme weather warnings issued by the BMKG.

On Tuesday evening, the Barsarnas team successfully rescued two local fishermen whose traditional jukung boat had capsized after being hit by high waves.

This led the Head of Barsarnas to issue updates to tour operators, fishing crews, and tourists, to minimise time in the ocean and avoid entering the water during storms and high waves.

Nyoman Sidakarya told reporters, “We warn you again and advise you to avoid activities in the water, mountains, and other open areas. This bad weather is expected to last until January.”
