GIANYAR, Bali – A foreign tourist allegedly stole clothing worth around Rp2.5 million from a boutique in Ubud after concealing several items in a large bag, according to a report by local news outlet detikBali.
The incident reportedly occurred at about 4:40 p.m. on Monday (July 27) at Yoga Shanty, a boutique on Jalan Hanoman in the heart of Ubud.
An employee, Wangsa Kartika, said the woman entered the shop alone carrying a large white bag. She appeared to browse the racks like any other customer before allegedly slipping several items into her bag while staff were assisting other shoppers.
Security camera footage that has since circulated on social media appears to show the woman taking four red-coloured garments over the course of about 10 minutes. The items were said to include a pair of trousers, a tank top, a mini skirt and a jumpsuit.
“The total value of the stolen items was around Rp2.5 million,” Wangsa said the stolen items were worth around Rp2.5 million. According to his account, the woman tried on a pair of trousers in the fitting room before placing the clothing in her bag.
“We were busy serving other customers at the time. Her movements were very quick,” he said.
The store was unable to identify the woman but described her as having dark hair, wearing a green top and shorts, and carrying a large white bag.
Police officers later visited the boutique to gather preliminary information, although no formal police report had been filed as of Tuesday. According to Wangsa, the shop chose to share the CCTV footage publicly in an effort to warn other businesses in the area.
He added that the boutique had experienced four shoplifting incidents, including the latest case.
Police had not publicly identified a suspect or announced any charges as of Tuesday.
