DENPASAR, Bali – It began with a suitcase arriving from Thailand.
Days later, the journey would end on a road in Bali’s Bangli Regency, where two Russian nationals were arrested following a narcotics investigation that authorities say led to the seizure of 7.8 kilograms of hashish.
The case, which involved multiple Indonesian agencies and stretched across several provinces, is now being investigated as a possible link to a broader international drug trafficking network.
Indonesia’s National Narcotics Agency (BNN) identified the suspects as Kira Kochetkova, 51, and Sergei Khlebushchev, 39.
According to BNN, the investigation began after customs officers at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport detected a suitcase arriving from Thailand that was suspected of containing narcotics.
Rather than immediately seizing the shipment, authorities launched a controlled-delivery operation — a law enforcement tactic used to monitor the movement of illicit goods in an effort to identify recipients and uncover wider criminal networks.
BNN said investigators tracked the shipment as Kochetkova continued her journey toward Bali.
After arriving in Indonesia, she traveled overland to Ketapang Port in East Java before crossing to Gilimanuk Port in western Bali during the early hours of June 5.
Authorities said Kochetkova later met Khlebushchev in Bali, where investigators continued monitoring their movements as part of the operation.
The case involved cooperation between BNN, the Directorate General of Customs and Excise, the Indonesian National Police, and the Ministry of Immigration and Correctional Affairs.
The operation took a dramatic turn in Bangli when officers moved to make arrests.
According to authorities, the suspects attempted to flee, triggering a pursuit that stretched through parts of Bangli Regency.
During the incident, four local residents were injured, including 71-year-old food vendor Ni Wayan Sudarmi, who was taken to hospital for treatment after suffering injuries to both knees.
Three other residents sustained minor injuries after their motorcycles were reportedly struck by the suspects’ vehicle.
Authorities later detained both suspects in Kayubihi Village, Bangli, bringing an end to the pursuit.
Following the arrests, BNN announced that investigators had seized approximately 7.8 kilograms of hashish allegedly linked to the case.
Hashish is a concentrated cannabis product made from compressed cannabis resin and typically contains significantly higher levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the primary psychoactive compound found in cannabis.
Brigadier General Putu Putera Sadana, Head of BNN’s Public Relations and Protocol Bureau, said investigators are continuing to examine whether additional suspects may be connected to the case.
“This case is still under investigation. If other suspects or additional evidence are found, we will report further developments,” Sadana said.
Authorities are currently tracing potential distribution routes, financial connections, and individuals who may have been involved in receiving or distributing the narcotics.
For investigators, the arrests represent only one stage of a larger effort to determine how a shipment of hashish traveled from Thailand to Bali — and whether others were waiting to receive it.
