DENPASAR, Bali — A 25-year-old Portuguese national was taken to hospital after allegedly disturbing passengers at Bali’s I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, authorities said on Wednesday.
The man, identified by his initials PNRL, was detained by officers from the Badung Public Order Agency (Satpol PP) after airport security reported disruptive behaviour inside the international terminal on Tuesday evening.
I Wayan Suantara, commander of the Satpol PP unit assigned to Kuta District, said officers responded after receiving a request for assistance from airport authorities.
“We received a report from the airport regarding a foreign national causing a disturbance and disrupting passengers in the international terminal,” Suantara said, speaking with permission from Badung Satpol PP chief. “After securing him, we took him to Prof. Ngoerah Hospital for medical evaluation.”
Authorities said the man was taken to the Denpasar hospital because officers believed his condition required medical assessment. Officials did not confirm any medical diagnosis.
According to Satpol PP, airport security first encountered the man at around 8:15 p.m. local time in the international departure check-in area. Security personnel monitored his movements before intervening after he was reported to be disturbing other airport users.
He was later detained by a joint airport security team, including walking patrol officers and police assigned to Ngurah Rai Airport, before being handed over to Satpol PP officers.
Suantara said the man was uncooperative and resisted while being escorted but was eventually transported safely to hospital.
Authorities have not determined why the Portuguese national was inside the international departure area. Suantara said airport officials were unable to find a flight ticket in his possession, although he was carrying two suitcases and a passport.
“We cannot yet confirm whether he intended to leave Indonesia because no ticket was found under his name,” Suantara said.
Satpol PP said its role was limited to securing the individual and facilitating his transfer for medical treatment. The agency has not yet coordinated with immigration authorities, while airport officials indicated that the Portuguese consulate would be contacted regarding the case.
Hospital officials have not publicly disclosed the man’s condition, and immigration authorities had not commented at the time of publication.
