In early June 2023, officials in Badung Regency who are in charge of business operations in resorts like Canggu, Seminyak, Uluwatu, Legian, Kuta, and Nusa Dua announced that they would be cracking down on illegally operating accommodations in the area. A crackdown that has continued to be carried out to varying intensities for more than two years.

The team has a special focus on the Canggu area and is working with business owners to ensure that all tourist accommodation is operating above board.

Officials have reminded tourists that they are legally obliged to stay in accommodation that is a legally registered business, whether a hotel, hostel, guesthouse, or private villa.

The announcement came as part of Governor Koster’s list of dos and don’ts for Bali tourists and refined rules around tourists driving on the island.

The Governor regularly re-issues statements to remind all tourists that they must stay in accommodation where hotel and restaurant tax is being paid: e.g, formal accommodation business.

While this is certainly not something tourists could or should police themselves, there are a few ways to ensure that you are staying at a legally registered business.

This is especially true when renting a private villa in Canggu. The business permits should be on display at reception or easily shown on request, and a receipt should be provided for your stay on a headed invoice that matches the name of the accommodation.

With the formalities out of the way, let’s explore the accommodation options that are attracting tourists from all over the world to Canggu.

Hotels

Of course, there are hotels in Canggu. While the area is best known for backpacker hostels and locally owned guesthouses, the big brands have definitely moved into the area, and there are plenty of resort-style hotels to choose from.

Perhaps the most famous and luxurious hotel in Canggu is the COMO Uma Canggu.

This ultra-stylish beachfront hotel is also home to a stunning wellness retreat, an in-house surf school, and incredible fine-dining restaurants too.

COMO Uma Canggu can be found just steps away from Batu Mejan Beach, perfectly positioned between the heart of Canggu and ever stylish Seminyak.

Guesthouses

For a long time, Canggu was a destination visited only by surfers and backpackers, and as such, the area became punctuated by locally run guesthouses.

One of the most famous and much-loved locally run guesthouses in Canggu is Serenity Eco Guesthouse.

Serenity Eco Guesthouse is also home to a highly regarded yoga studio and mediation center, which hosts weekly Vipassana sittings for locals and those who want to maintain their practice while on vacation.

Guesthouses like Serenity Eco in Canggu are a fantastic way to feel more immersed in the day-to-day happenings of life in Canggu.

Many guesthouses in the area offer incredible value for money, and a local breakfast of fruit and coffee is often included.

Hostels and Co-Living

With the rise of digital nomadism and backpacking becoming evermore popular, hostels and co-living are the vibe right now in Canggu. Tribal Bali is one of the most popular hostels and co-living spaces in Bali.

Located in the heart of Pererenan in Canngu, Tribal’s motto is Work, Rest, Play, and the team have created an environment where like-minded souls can connect and explore the wonders of Bali together.

Private Villas

Canggu truly spoils tourists when it comes to private villas. From lavish mansions to traditional joglos and everything in between, renting a private villa in Canggu gives tourists a chance to really feel at home.

Many private villas are just a short barefooted walk from the most popular beaches and are available to book by night, week, month, or even year!
