DENPASAR, Bali — A running community in Bali’s popular Canggu area has come under public scrutiny following allegations that Indonesian citizens were excluded from joining one of its events, prompting calls for an investigation by local authorities.
The allegations surfaced after screenshots circulated on social media appearing to show a prospective Indonesian participant being told they could not join because of their nationality. The posts drew widespread criticism, with many questioning whether a community event held in Bali and using public roads should be allowed to restrict participation based on citizenship.
Popular among foreign visitors
The community is known for organizing early-morning group runs in Canggu that have attracted expatriates, digital nomads and international visitors.
The event gained attention on social media before the allegations shifted public focus to questions over inclusivity and the use of public spaces.
Senator urges authorities to investigate
Bali Senator Ni Luh Djelantik has called on Bali Immigration and Bali Police to investigate both the alleged discrimination and whether the event had obtained the necessary permits.
In a statement posted on her verified Instagram account on Friday, Djelantik urged authorities to investigate reports involving foreign nationals and activities suspected of operating without the required permits.
“We ask Bali Immigration and Bali Police to follow up on our report regarding alleged discrimination by foreign nationals and activities suspected of operating without the required permits,” she wrote.
She also criticized any policy that would exclude Indonesians from events held in Bali.
“You are doing this in Bali. You are doing this in Indonesia. This is our homeland,” Djelantik added.
Venue distances itself
The controversy also prompted a response from Atelier Sandwich Bali, where one of the running events was held.
In a statement posted on Instagram, the venue said its role was limited to providing the location and food and beverage services for participants.
It said it was not involved in participant registration, membership decisions or any internal policies set by the event organizers.
The venue also said it condemns racism and discrimination in all forms and welcomes guests of every nationality equally.
Officials reviewing permit requirements
Badung Public Order Agency (Satpol PP) chief I Gusti Agung Ketut Suryanegara said his office had not received any request for recommendations related to the event.
He said officials are reviewing regulations governing the use of public roads for community activities.
According to Suryanegara, events that affect traffic or make use of public roads generally require coordination or approval from the relevant authorities.
Authorities yet to announce findings
As of Friday, authorities had not announced any formal findings regarding the allegations or any enforcement action related to the case.
The investigation remains under public attention as officials continue reviewing the allegations and the event’s permit requirements.
