Bali is one of the most adored surf destinations in the world. From the steady waves of Kuta, through the powerful right-hander of Keramas, through to the playful left-hand breaks of Medewi, there is a wave for every kind of surfer in Bali.

One destination that has certainly been overlooked by the masses as a top surf spot in Bali is Nusa Dua. Known for its luxury resorts and gentle shoreline lapping waves, Nusa Dua is embracing a new chapter as a surfing paradise.

General Manager of The Nusa Dua (ITDC), Made Agus Dwiatmika, revealed that while the Nusa Dua coastline has long been a destination for cruise-loving surfers, there is plenty of potential just waiting to be tapped into.

Dwiatmika confirmed that though The Nusa Dua is a luxury tourism resort, surfers and tourists are not charged for surfing activities in the area. Visitors must only pay a small fee to park their cars or motorcycles in the car park area. He noted, however, that conversations are underway to develop The Nusa Dua as a top surfing destination in Bali.

Dwiatmika explained “Until now, ITDC has not charged a special fee for surfing activities there. Those who do activities only need to report and visitors only need to pay parking fees.” Adding “On an ongoing basis, we always discuss with the association about what is needed to increase their potential.”

He also confirmed that The Nusa Dua is issuing language training for staff at its member properties. Language training in English, Chinese, Russian, and Hindi is all in high demand.

Dwiatmika added, “We from ITDC have committed that in this case, we invite everyone to grow including the surrounding community.”

He revealed that as part of developing The Nusa Dua into a more multi-faceted destination, with more activities and leisure opportunities for tourists, the resort’s commitment to safety and comfort remains a top priority.

The General Manager explained “This year we plan to cooperate with insurance companies so that all activities at The Nusa Dua can be insured. The target is for this system to be implemented in 2025.”

There are a series of must-try surf spots in Nusa Dua. While many of the beaches in Nusa Dua are not lined with surf shacks and surf schools like in Kuta, Seminyak, and Canggu, it is more than possible to hire a board in the area and head on out to the ocean.

Nico Beach, also known as the Nikko Break, is a spot favored by experienced surfers, due to the high speed and power of the wave.

For beginner surfers in Nusa Dua, the best spot is perhaps Mengiat. Easy to access and offering both left and right breaks, locals recommended heading out on the mid-high tide. It should be noted, though, that since many of the breaks in Nusa Dua are over coral reefs when heading out for the first few times, it is advisable to book a surf instructor or if you’re already an experienced surfer, head out with the regulars of these waves to understand the how things roll.

It will always remain the case that Bali’s world-famous Kuta Beach is the best place to learn to surf. Followed by its neighbors, Legian and Seminyak. From backpackers to holidaymakers, digital nomads, and retirees, the reliable waves of Kuta Beach have long been the playground for surfers of every style and ability.

It is possible to book a single-hour surf lesson in Bali on the spot at one of the many surf schools that line the beaches of the central south. For more intense and immersive training, many tourists choose to book a group of lessons or even sign up for a week-long surf camp that includes all your training, accommodation, cultural trips, and adventures with new surf camp friends.
