Tourist Falls While Taking Photos at Padar Island Summit

LABUAN BAJO, East Nusa Tenggara — A Chinese tourist was injured after slipping and falling while taking photos at the summit of Padar Island in Komodo National Park, West Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), on Tuesday (Aug. 18, 2026).

The tourist, identified as Zhuotao Wu, had trekked to the summit before stopping to take photos. He then slipped and fell, leaving him unconscious.

“After reaching the summit, the victim took photos, then slipped and fell and became unconscious,” Fathur Rahman, head of the Maumere Search and Rescue Office, said.

A joint SAR team reached Padar Island at around 12:25 p.m. local time and evacuated Wu aboard a rigid inflatable boat (RIB) operated by the West Manggarai SAR Post.

He was taken to Marina Labuan Bajo Port before being transferred to an ambulance operated by the Labuan Bajo Port Health Office.

Wu was then taken to Siloam Hospital Labuan Bajo for further medical treatment.

The evacuation involved personnel from the West Manggarai SAR Rescue Team, Lanal Labuan Bajo, the NTT Police Water and Air Unit, West Manggarai Police, and the Labuan Bajo Port Authority and Harbormaster Office (KSOP).

Fathur urged tourists and visitors taking part in trekking or other outdoor activities to remain aware of their surroundings, assess the terrain carefully and follow safety instructions from officers at tourist sites.

Authorities have not provided further details on what caused Wu to slip. The official account only states that he slipped after taking photos at the summit.
