Tourists’ Cash and Belongings Found Scattered on Lombok Hiking Trail

LOMBOK, West Nusa Tenggara — Local guides found millions of rupiah in cash and personal belongings scattered along a hiking trail on Mount Pergasingan in East Lombok after the items were reportedly taken by wild monkeys.

The discovery was made on Thursday, August 20, when three guides found Rp100,000 banknotes scattered along the trail while descending from the mountain.

They also found a mobile phone, passport, keys and other personal belongings.

Local media reported that the items belonged to two foreign tourists travelling with another guide. The cash was estimated at between Rp4 million and Rp5 million.

The belongings were reportedly taken and carried away by wild monkeys before being scattered along the hiking trail. The circumstances could not be independently verified.

After collecting the items, the three guides tried to locate their owners by asking foreign hikers they encountered on the trail.

They eventually found the two tourists and returned the money and belongings.

The tourists were reportedly relieved and happy to have their possessions back. They also offered the guides a reward, but the guides declined it.

The incident has drawn attention online after footage of the guides collecting the scattered cash and belongings was shared on social media.
