GILIMANUK, Bali — President Prabowo Subianto launched Indonesia’s 100 gigawatt-peak (GWp) solar power programme in Gilimanuk, Jembrana, Bali, on Tuesday (Aug. 25), marking the start of a major government push to expand renewable energy across the country.
The launch and groundbreaking took place at the Monument of the Java-Bali Sea Crossing Operation in Gilimanuk.
The programme is part of the government’s national priority agenda on energy and water independence and is intended to strengthen Indonesia’s energy security while reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
The initial phase involves 14 solar power projects with a combined capacity of 5.3 GWp across six provinces, including Bali. The projects are part of the government’s broader plan to develop 100 GWp of solar power within three years, with completion targeted by 2029.
The government estimates the programme could generate annual savings of up to Rp73.9 trillion in electricity subsidies.
Bali’s inclusion in the first phase places the island among the early locations for the national solar expansion. The Gilimanuk site is one of the projects included in the initial rollout.
Indonesia has an estimated solar energy potential of around 3,294 GWp, but installed solar capacity stood at only about 1.5 GWp as of April 2026, highlighting the scale of the expansion planned under the programme.
The government has also linked the solar programme to broader economic opportunities, including investment in power generation, battery technology and electricity networks, as well as the development of Indonesia’s domestic solar photovoltaic (PV) industry.
Energy Minister Bahlil Lahadalia said the 100 GWp programme is expected to attract investment of around US$73 billion and create millions of jobs as the country expands its renewable energy infrastructure.
The programme is also being positioned as part of Indonesia’s wider energy transition, alongside efforts to improve electricity access and reduce the use of diesel-fired power plants.
President Prabowo has previously called for the development of the 100 GWp solar programme to be accelerated. The government says implementation will be carried out in stages and monitored through 2029.
The initiative is expected to play a significant role in Indonesia’s efforts to build a more resilient and self-sufficient energy system while developing new investment and employment opportunities in the renewable energy sector.
