MANDALIKA, Indonesia — A German tourist was killed in a traffic collision near the Mandalika International Circuit in Central Lombok after his motorcycle was struck by a vehicle driven by a Ukrainian national.
The crash occurred on Thursday, October 8, near the Novotel roundabout on the road leading toward the circuit’s West Gate parking area.
Police said the 48-year-old German national was riding a black Honda Vario from west to east when a white Nissan Navara travelling in the same direction struck the motorcycle from behind.
The impact sent the motorcycle and its rider toward the median, while the Nissan overturned and struck a light pole.
Emergency personnel and medical teams responded to the scene.
Police said the German rider suffered serious injuries and received emergency treatment, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation and fluid therapy.
He was later pronounced dead at around 11:41 a.m.
The victim was initially taken for medical treatment before his body was transferred for further handling.
The Nissan was driven by a 42-year-old Ukrainian national, who was also taken to Mandalika Hospital following the crash.
Two Russian nationals travelling as passengers in the vehicle, aged 27 and 34, were also injured.
Police said the 27-year-old passenger was treated for a suspected closed fracture to the left arm, while the other passenger suffered a hematoma and bleeding around the nose and forehead.
All three occupants of the vehicle were taken to Mandalika Hospital for treatment.
Traffic accident investigators from Central Lombok Police are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the collision.
The crash occurred close to the Mandalika International Circuit one day before the start of the Indonesian MotoGP weekend, scheduled for October 9–11.
Authorities have not indicated that any of the foreign nationals involved in the crash were connected to the MotoGP event.
